We all know that rape is a traumatizing, violent experience, but not much beyond that.
Did you know that most rapes go unreported? That juries have a tendency to rule in the perpetrators favor depending on the physical appearance and emotional state of the victim? That if any alcohol is consumed before the rape occurs, the victim may not be entitled compensation? That many rape victims are imprisoned for filing false police reports?
In working on this project, I've been continually appalled at societies accusatory attitude towards rape victims, and the refusal of law enforcement to take action. I can't tell you how many women have responded to the project with understanding, themselves or someone close to them having been raped- and often times not reporting it. In this society, there's no wonder why.
But I've also been amazed by those women who persevere and thrive despite their experiences. For them, I hope this message gets through.
